Dynamic web sites, also called database driven websites, offer browsers an expanded menu of options compared with a static HTML website.   For example, a dynamic website may offer features such as, searchable catalogs, personalized areas, or allow your visitors to book, ask questions, personalize and interact with your website.

Dynamic websites are usually powered by a Content Management System (CMS) and written in the most popular programming language for dynamic websites, PHP, and the most popular database is SQL.

Some benefits of dynamic websites are:

  • Control over Content – Dynamic websites allow you to edit, add, delete, update and modify content quickly and easily.    Changes to content can usually be done without technical knowledge of FTP or HTML.
  • Customization – Every business is different and has different needs for effectively showcasing their products or services.  Dynamic websites can be developed for your unique business needs, giving functionality that will increase your conversion rate and sales.
  • Scalability – Dynamic websites scale up quickly and easily.  You can easily go from 10 pages to 5000 pages without upgrading software or applications.  Since dynamic websites extract information from a database, it doesn’t matter how many ‘pages’ there are in the website, since they are ‘virtual pages.’
  • Lower costs – Updating a website can be time consuming and if you are using a web development company to update for you, very expensive.  Dynamic web sites can be updated frequently, quickly and easily and without any technical knowledge or experience.   If you can use WORD and Internet Explorer, then you can update your website.
  • Better Ranking.   The main search engines, Google, Yahoo and MSN all value sites that have fresh and up to date content.  After all, who wants to visit a site that hasn’t been updated for years?    The search engines tend to rank sites that are updated frequently higher in the Search Engine Rankings.
  • Increased traffic – Users return to frequently updated sites over and over again.     The benefit of the Internet over other media such as newspapers is the Internet can deliver up-to-the-minute information.
  • Better Maintenance – a dynamic website is much easier to manage and avoids problems like broken links, as well as orphaned and ‘lost’ pages.

If you are not sure if you need a dynamic website, here are some popular applications:

  • Featured products – rotate a featured product, which you can control from a central ADMIN panel.  Great for Product of the Month.
  • News – update your site with news and special announcements
  • Education and training – dynamic websites and CMS systems are used by thousands of Universities and Colleges as well as thousands of companies large and small.
  • Online support – Allow clients to query a database of common questions online.
  • Advertising management – manage banners and advertisements with a full range of options.
  • Announcements – post special announcements on your site
  • Events and calendars - Calendars and diaries are all dynamic based applications.

These are just a few applications, by the list goes on.  The best part is that many CMS systems are Open Source and very low cost or free!  If you have been thinking of a dynamic website, or considering how to improve your existing website, now is definitely the time to consider a dynamic site.
